Larissa Boyd is a 17-year-old singer-songwriter, who joined the Waco country music scene in June 2020. A high school senior, she’s been involved in music her whole life. Boyd plays multiple instruments, including guitar, piano, and ukulele.
Recently she made the leap into the professional music scene, writing and performing songs inspired by her personal journey. “Any Other Guy,” like her other original songs, illustrates how her life experiences inform her music.
“I’m a teenager, and like everyone, I’ve gone through my fair share of heartbreaking stuff. This song is about a boy who knew no matter what, I would always come back to him, and he took advantage of that,” said Boyd. “In the song, you can tell how he felt and how I felt.”
The song tells a tale of teenage heartbreak and betrayal. In it, Boyd sings, “I thought with time we were bound to change, I mean I guess you have. You just got worse, and I’m still hoping that we could work… You come crawling when you’re bored with what you have.”
Throughout her career to date, Boyd has tried to create a distinct sound to distance herself from the “pop” country so common on today’s radio.
“I play country music but not the generic radio country music. I play Texas country, which is what I think is real country,” said Boyd. “I play original music too, which takes its inspiration from Texas country music.”
She recently released “Alone in Your Mind,” her newest original song, on the morning of her latest performance at Southern Roots Brewing Company in early November.
“It was so surreal seeing the song come alive in the way that it did,” said Boyd. “It’s very emotional and vulnerable. It’s very real. There is a lot of truth in the song.”
Boyd’s acoustic performances are much like her songs — upbeat and lively — with people swaying along to the music and having a good time.
In addition to Southern Roots, you can often catch Boyd playing at Freight Bar, BIG’s Mayberry Tavern, and the Backyard Saloon.
