Marjorie Lewis’ debut novel When the Men Were Gone is based on the true story of Tylene Wilson, a female high school football coach in 1944. Fabled will be showcasing Lewis’ book with a signing event as she shares the story as well as her life as an author.

Michelle Newby Lancaster wrote in a review of Lewis’ novel in Lone Star Literary Life: “Wilson battles through boycotts by referees, illegal school-board meetings, threats of forfeit from opposing teams, and the doubts of her own team. The first time a player calls Wilson ‘coach’ is sweetly touching. The climactic scenes are active, dramatic, and exciting, complete with a twist at the end.”

When she was 27, Lewis began working at the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.  Two years later, she was a beat writer for the Dallas Cowboys.  Lewis later joined The Dallas Morning News sports-writing staff.  Throughout her career, she has covered college and professional sports, including the Texas Rangers and Dallas Mavericks, as well as the Super Bowl, Wimbledon, and the NCAA men’s basketball tournament.
